If nothing else, Young Justice's second -- and, as it
turns out, final -- season was big. It took our characters off-world on multiple
occasions, brought a season-long cosmic threat to bear on planet Earth, and
seriously expanded the roster of not just the team itself but the entire cast
of the show.
It was also quite good at giving us the superhero
equivalent of blue balls, both in terms of delayed gratification story-wise as
well as its ongoing tendency to get bumped from Cartoon Network's schedule for
extended periods of time.
Year two kicked off in April of 2012 (in a sort of
confusing way, as there was no break between the Season 2 premiere
and the Season 1 finale that aired the week prior). Right off the bat (pun
intended), it was clear that we were in new ground: A five-year time jump had
occurred between seasons, and the Young Justice that we knew and loved from the
first season was gone forever. Robin was now Nightwing. Kid Flash, Aqualad and
Artemis were simply not present nor mentioned. And loads of new characters had
joined the team in the intervening years, including Lagoon Boy, Bumblebee,
Beast Boy, Batgirl, Wonder Girl, Blue Beetle and the Tim Drake Robin.
All of which was… cool. But worrying, particularly
knowing how creators Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti tended to gloss over
characterization in favor of (admittedly awesome) eye-candy action scenes and
plot, plot, plot in Season 1
By the second episode, "Earthlings," some of
these concerns were put to rest as Weisman and Vietti began to delve into how
our core team had changed in those five years (like Superboy and Miss Martian's
breaking up) while also starting to build connections to the new characters,
like Beast Boy and his back story involving the death of his and M'Gann's
"mom." As the season would proceed, most of these newer characters
would get less and less focus, however, in favor of Blue Beetle (for the most
part). Wonder Girl and Batgirl fans, for example, were pretty much out of luck.
By the third episode, "Alienated," the main
players in the Justice League were departing for deep space to face a jury of
their… well, not their peers. But they were essentially off the table for the
rest of the season, which meant that the sidekicks were now charged with
Earth's defense. Frankly, that was a smart move by the writers. Having the JLA
always around threatened to short-circuit the storytelling of Young Justice in
the first season and undermine the younger heroes.
Soon we learned that Aqualad was now evil -- or seemed to
be, anyway -- the Roy Harper clone has been searching for the real Speedy for
five years, and Wally and Artemis were now a couple and retired
from the superhero biz (amazing what a New Year's kiss can do!). As always, the
show's writers were able to take inspiration from the storylines from the
comics while making them their own. Take Roy's "intervention," for
example, which while not specifically about drugs, certainly tracks with that old
Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams plot involving the character.
By the time Impulse joined the show in the sixth episode
of the season, "Bloodlines" -- visiting from the future only to wind
up stranded (or so he said) -- it was clear that the bipolar tendencies of Young
Justice were in full swing. The new and shiny were getting the focus in favor
of the old and familiar, and as fun as an episode like "Bloodlines"
could be -- and yes, it did put Wally back in the Kid Flash costume finally, if
briefly, for a Flash family reunion -- I for one always had the sense that we
were missing out on important character beats in favor of lots of often
confusing plot and action scenes.
Main Cast
______________________________________________
Batgirl / Barbara Gordon (voiced
by Alyson Stoner) – Originally a classmate of
Dick's at the Gotham Academy. In the time between Seasons 1 and 2, she assumed
the identity of Batgirl and became a member of the Team. Designation: B16.
Beast Boy /
Garfield Logan (voiced by Logan Grove) - Gar is
introduced sans powers in the Season 1 episode "Image", when he
receives a blood transfusion from Miss Martian. That transfusion presumably
grants him the ability to shape-shift into animals (ergo, the name Beast Boy)
sometime before the second season begins. He now has green skin and assumes his
hero disguise with monkey-like features. Designation: B19.
Blue Beetle /
Jaime Reyes (voiced by Eric Lopez) – Sometime
during the five-year lapse between Seasons 1 and 2, he joined the Team. A
device called the Scarab is permanently attached to his spine, providing him a
battle suit. The scarab is believed to be the last invention made by Ted Kord
before the Light killed him, but it is revealed in the episode 'Before the
Dawn' that its origins lie with the alien organization known as the Reach, who
have their own plans for Blue Beetle. Due to this, Jaime is one of the central
characters in Season 2. Designation: B22.
Bumblebee / Karen Beecher (voiced
by Masasa Moyo)
– A young scientist and girlfriend of Mal Duncan. She and Mal were classmates
of Superboy and Miss Martian at Happy Harbor High School. Her suit acts as
armor and imbues her with bee-themed powers including shrinking, flight, and
electrical blasts called 'stings'. Karen often works with Professor Palmer AKA
the Atom. Designation: B17.
Mal Duncan /
Guardian (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) – The boyfriend
of Karen Beecher and classmate of Superboy and Miss Martian at Happy Harbor
High School. Sometime between Season 1 and Season 2, he was brought on as
mission coordinator for the team. Like Nightwing, Robin, Red Arrow, and
Arsenal, Mal Duncan lacks super powers. During an encounter with Despero in
"Cornered," he assumed the Guardian superhero armor which had
previously belonged to Jim Harper. By the time of "War", he operates
as a full member of the team as the Guardian. Designation: B24.
Lagoon Boy /
La'gaan (voiced by Yuri Lowenthal)
– A student at Atlantis' Conservatory of Sorcery. Sometime during the five-year
lapse between Seasons 1 and 2, he joined the Team. He and Miss Martian also became
romantically involved. He is frequently frustrated by not having more
interesting field assignments. Designation: B18.
Robin / Tim
Drake (voiced by Cameron Bowen) – The third
person to adopt the Robin identity, after Dick Grayson (who has since become
Nightwing), and Jason Todd (who is now deceased). Nightwing
acts as something of a mentor to Tim, though Tim is far more hesitant and
cautious than Dick was when he was Robin. Designation: B20.
Wonder Girl / Cassie Sandsmark (voiced
by Mae Whitman)
– Wonder Woman's sidekick. She joined the team sometime between the events of
Season 1 and Season 2. She is energetic and often impulsive, but a talented fighter.
Designation: B21.
Impulse / Bart
Allen (voiced
by Jason Marsden) - A speedster from the future
who is the grandson of the current Flash (Barry Allen). He puts on a front as a
cheerful and talkative youth to the heroes of 2016, hiding his real self.
Pretending to get accidentally stuck in 2016, Bart is determined to alter
history to prevent the post-apocalyptic future from which he comes.
Designation: B23.
Speedy / Arsenal / Roy Harper (voiced
by Crispin Freeman) – The original Speedy. After
the connection between him and Red Arrow is revealed at the end of Season 1, he
is rescued from a long stasis in Season 2. After coming to grips with his
current situation, he joins the team under the name Arsenal. In addition to
being an excellent marksman, Roy wears a mechanical arm filled with high-tech
weapons, provided by Lex Luthor. Designation: B25.
